The Betrothed

One star. I give this book one star. Even though the story/plot itself wasn’t that bad, I can’t get over the fact that the characters were so… bland? The book is written in Hollis’ POV, but it feels like I don’t really know who she is. The book does not, in my opinion, go much in detail about her feelings and emotions. For example, when her beloved husband Silas died, there was barely any emotion. Yes, she did cry in the book, but it was not that intense, and I just hoped that there would be a scene where her grief would be shown. Her lover died, but when does she cries her heart out? It was only a few tears for a short time and then it felt like ‘moving on’. There was this chapter where it ended with her screaming of sadness, and that was that? What happened during that, and what exactly did she felt and thought? Unfortunately, the writer often only described what is happening instead of letting the readers feel one’s emotions.

This includes also the rest of the characters in this book. I felt like I didn’t know anyone, but I blame the writer the most for Hollis because she is the main character. I would have loved to read more about king Jameson and Silas; what is their history? And I want to know their personality! I want to know them! Who are they?! Who is everyone?! Besides that, the appearances of all characters could be more explained and specified, maybe I miss that part but what is the hair color of king Jameson? Also, Hollis’ skin color is light brown, but on the cover of the book her skin looks white, but that could just be me so maybe there are other thinking it does look light brown.

Overall, the writer failed in dragging me into the story, it was poorly written and therefor I give one star.
